Field Notes : Mandarin Oriental, Jumeirah
Yesterday, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira felt busy. That caught my attention because I’ve been thinking about the gap between Dubai’s improving hospitality numbers and how that recovery actually feels in the spaces we visit.
In my last Hospitality Insights article, I shared the figures from Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism: hotel occupancy rose from 36% in March to 66% in August 2026. Encouraging progress, although August was still below the level recorded a year earlier.
One visit can’t tell us who is driving that demand. But as someone who has lived in Dubai for many years, I’m interested in the role residents play—not only as overnight guests, but as people who return to hotels for a meal, a meeting or simply time in a beautiful space.
That’s part of why I keep returning to Mandarin Oriental Jumeira. The Canopy of Light and its reflection in the lobby water feature always make me pause. What I remember just as clearly is the attention from the team - a manager noticing a dish arriving and offering an accompaniment, or a member of the team taking a moment to check how things are going. Yesterday I arrived straight from work, hardly dressed for an occasion, and felt as welcome as I have on any other visit.
Whenever asked which hotel I had great experience at, Mandarin Oriental, Jumeirah always comes to mind.
I’m also looking forward to seeing Mandarin Oriental Downtown for myself. The high-rise setting looks quite different, and I’m curious to experience how that same sense of welcome translates there.
For those working across Dubai hospitality: are you seeing more familiar, locally based guests in your spaces, even as international visitors returns?
